Rules, Rules, Rules

In chapter 5, when Jack and Ralph argue, Ralph says, "The rules are all we've got!" How important are rules in society? What rules are needed in this microcosm if the boys are to survive? Why? (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight, Thursday, April 18, 2013.)

The rules Ralph is saying they need for survival is to keep the fire going on top of the mountain, make sure that is the only place a fire takes place, and also to use the rock for lavatory. I think Ralph's rules are not unreasonable and completely necessary to keep everything in order. -CD

Without rules there would be no boundaries and everything would be chaos. The rules that Ralph establish in the book are helpful for their survival because their ultimate goal is to be rescued. One example is keeping the fire going for someone to find them. Hunting and getting drinking water are also important for them to be able to survive until they get rescued.

In society, there are rules in place for multiple reasons. They are rules to keep people safe and rules to guide people in their day to day lives, as well as many other reasons. Rules are very important in society. People, by nature, are selfish, not on purpose but as their basic instinct to survive. Animals in the wild are very protective of their food and other items as they are a pivotal part of their survival. People are the same way, they have a primal instinct designed to keep them alive. People by nature, are selfish as a means to survive. Rules keep people from harming others and breaking moral codes. Without rules people would do what ever it took to survive, even turning on each other and killing one another.
Ralph should put a few rules in. First, he should make it mandatory that all the boys work together. When all the boys are working together, little and big more can be done to ensure their survival and their ability to be rescued. Next, he should have different people do different jobs, so that way if something to happened to someone who did that job, the group would still be able to function. Last, the boys, under no circumstances turn on and go against each other. If the boys start working against one another and for their own agendas people are going to be hurt and the whole mini society they have is going to fall apart while waiting to be rescued.
