The Shell and the Glasses

At the end of Chapter 10, Jack and his savages raid the other boys. What does Piggy believe Jack wants? What does this symbolize or reflect about Piggy's views? What, however, does Jack want? How does this reflect his views? What is Golding saying through this raid about the microcosm of the island? (The deadline to post a response to this blog is midnight, Saturday, April 27, 2013. Piggy believes that Jack wants the conch. Piggy views this as Jack wanting to take their sense of leadership and community. Jack wanted to steal Piggy's glasses so he could make a fire. This shows that Jack's views are selfish and that he is only concerned about himself. Golding is saying through the raid about the microcosm of the island that when they work together and go by the rules, things get accomplished more efficiently and nobody has to steal from each other.
