Welcome to English IV!

George Eliot once wrote "It is never too late to be what you might have been." This is one of my all time favorite quotes because it echoes my belief that anyone at anytime has the power to choose his destiny. This semester as we journey through composition writing and American literature, I hope that you will find something that will inspire to choose the right destiny for yourself. I hope that you will enjoy the class and let me help you improve and enhance your writing, grammar, and reading skills. I look forward to getting to know each of you and making this a successful semester. My first questions to you are "What would you like me to help you with this semester? Tears on the Sand

At the end of the novel, Ralph weeps for the first time. Golding writes, "Ralph...wept for the loss of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the loss of the true wise friend called Piggy." So much has happened to Ralph on this island. Which event do you feel had the greatest effect on Ralph? How did it change him? Why? Gift for the Darkness

In chapter 8 of Lord of the Flies, Ralph asks Piggy, "What causes things to break up like they do?" What are two principle reasons the society on the island has started to break up? Who will build the better hut?

Well, some huts stood and some huts fell while others never made it off the drawing board! The winners were Team Jack and Team Piggy. These huts withstood the "wind" tests. Good job, guys!

Received graded research papers back with the opportunity to correct them for an additional 10 points. They are due back in ten days--Nov. 1st.
Went over oral presentation guidelines and each student was told when his/her presentation would be. Presentations are Oct. 29, 30, and 31st. Given guidelines for visual aid and shown a visual aid.
Read and discussed Chapter 3 of Lord of the Flies.
In second block only, completed bell ringer 19--see binder in the back of class.
HOMEWORK: Begin working on career presentation and correcting research papers.

EXTRA CREDIT

Select one of the following and submit by May 3, 2013. NO PARTNERS EXCEPT FOR THEME SONG.
1. Draw a picture of a major event from each chapter of Lord of the Flies. You must color it. Each picture must be on a separate sheet of white paper.
2. Write a 800, typed double-spaced, report on William Golding. Include a bibliography. No credit for plagiarized work.
3. Make a trifold/display of information about Lord of the Flies and William Golding. Include pictures and bibliography.
4. Make a model of the island in Lord of the Flies. (Must be no larger than 3' x 3')
5. Make a board game about Lord of the Flies, include rules, object of the game, playing pieces.
6. Make a trifold/display of 8 major symbols in the novel. Explain what each symbol represents. Include pictures and bibliography.
7. Create the secret diary of one of the characters in the book. It must have 10 entries and cover the entire novel.
8. Write and perform the "theme" song to Lord of the Flies.

Career Research Paper

Don't forget that your Career Research Paper is due on Friday, March 15th. It must have a title page, outline with thesis statement, essay with citations, and works cited page. Paper clip the pages together and place it with the first three paragraphs and all note and source cards in a manilla envelope. Remember the paper is to be 1200-2500 words in length and five sources must be used in the paper, one of which must be the interview. Use the checksheet to make sure you are meeting requirements.

EXTRA CREDIT

Here is the list of extra credit due on May 3, 2012. It will not be taken late for any reason. Select ONE.

Read 8 poems about time. Answered questions about the poems. Discussed hyperbole, personification, metaphor, conceit, slant and exact rhyme.

Warm-up 17: There are many types and degrees of love. What type of love do you believe is strongest? Why? Give examples to support your ideas.
Read "Whoso List to Hunt," "Sonnet 30,"Sonnet 75, " "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, " and "The Nymph's Reply to the Passionate Shepherd." Wrote two paragraphs: 1. Which poem today did you must relate to and why? 2. Which poem was most difficult to comprehend, why, and how did you finally come to understand it?
Got oral presentation rubric. KP modeled how to give a good oral presentation.

RESEARCH PAPER DUE ON FRIDAY, MARCH 30th.

On Friday, March 30, 2012, your final draft of your research paper is due. You will turn in all source and note cards, all graded rough draft parts, and the final paper. The final paper should be paper clipped, not stapled. The final paper should have a title page, outline, the paper with citations, and the Works Cited page. All of these should be clean (non-graded) copies. All elements mentioned should be placed in a manilla brown envelope. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH PAPER. REMEMBER A RESEARCH PAPER IS REQUIRED TO PASS THE COURSE.

Watched A&E Biography of William Shakespeare. The discussion question on next Friday's unit test will come from this video.
Turned in first two body paragraphs of research paper. These were checked and given back so that you can finish your rough draft this weekend.

Got MLA research binders and handouts on research paper requirements.
Reviewed note and source card procedures.
We will be in the library Tuesday-Friday to research careers.

Warm-up 15:"It is never too late to become what you might have been." George Eliot. Think about second chances and the opportunities to get on "the right track." Write a response to prove this quote by drawing from your own life experiences, your reading of literature, or your knowledge of history. Use specific examples.
Then we read "The Pardoner's Tale, which is on page 131 of the literature book. After we read the story, we took a quiz on it.
Addressed envelopes and mailed thank you letters to interviewees.
HOMEWORK: Study for unit test on the Canterbury Tales, which will be on Wednesday.
